The earliest village schools can be traced back to sishu (private schools) in the New Territories. Their establishment, development, decline and transformation reflect the development of rural education in Hong Kong. To preserve cultural heritage in this area, the Hong Kong Museum of History collaborated with The Hong Kong Institute of Education in 2006 on a research project named "An Exploratory Survey on Village Schools in Hong Kong", to collect and record information about village schools in order to study the development of rural education in Hong Kong. Based on the information and materials collected from the research project, the exhibition "Under The Trees" introduces the development of village schools as well as their contribution to Hong Kong society through the display of panels, old photos, audio-visual materials and historical objects. The display of "People and Stories from Village Schools" features a selection of interesting stories from more than 50 village schools, to share with visitors the memories of school life in these unique educational institutions.
