Introduction

Hong Kong Costume – A Century of Decorum and Custom

5/12/1992 - 14/3/1993

A selection of the most spectacular and splendid in style and design of local costume dating from the late Qing period to the mid 20th century will be drawn from the museum collection for display in this exhibition. As clothing is one of the basic reflections of life, it is an eloquent expression of class and occupation, customs and creeds. Apart from the appreciation of these extravagant local costumes, we hope to further explore the role of clothing played in our daily life, social changes, traditional customs and values.

Over two hundred items of rural, urban and western clothing and accessories in a wide range of categories, worn by people of different ethnicity, nationalities and social status will be featured. Besides, the exhibition will be enriched with old postcards and historical photographs, etc.
