Introduction

Boundless Learning: Foreign-educated Students of Modern China

5/11/2003 – 9/2/2004

This joint venture with the National Museum of China illustrates the history of the Chinese students studying abroad during the period between the departure of Yung Wing for America in 1847 and the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949. Prominent figures who had studied abroad such as Jeme Tien Yow, Lu Xun, Hu Shi, Xu Zhimo, Zhou Enlai and Yung Chen Ning among others, will be introduced to cover their contributions in shaping China in the 20th century. The exhibition will also outline the achievements of some Hong Kong celebrities after the completion of their overseas studies so as to let the visitors learn more about the solid foundation they laid for the growth of Hong Kong, as well as their contributions to the cultural exchanges between the East and the West. About 250 artifacts, including those from the National Museum of China and various tertiary institutions in the US and Japan, will be put on display.
