‘Beyond the Mural: Echoes of the Tang Dynasty’ Virtual Reality Experience
Join us for the ‘Beyond the Mural: Echoes of the Tang Dynasty’ virtual reality experience. Follow our staff's instructions to put on the equipment, and you will be travelling back to the Tang dynasty with Li Guangren, the second son of Crown Prince Zhanghuai, Li Xian. Pick up the glowing vermilion polo ball in front of the Polo Match mural to activate the scene before your eyes. Instantly, the seven-year-old Li Guangren will appear and guide you into the mural, taking you back to the vibrant and magnificent Chang’an at the height of the Tang dynasty.

You will witness an intense polo match between Crown Prince Li Xian and Prince Ying. Then, the scene shifts to the countryside, where you will follow Li Xian’s hunting party. Through the perspective of a hunting falcon, you will soar over Chang’an City, taking in the grandeur of the Tang dynasty and experiencing the bold and heroic spirit of its people.

Li Guangren will then take you to the Court of State Ceremonial, where foreign envoys were received. Here, you will discover the emissaries from various nations and the tributes they brought, immersing yourself in the cosmopolitan Chang’an, the hub of Silk Road. Next, Li Guangren will guide you to a noble house, where you will glimpse maidservants dressed in men’s attire, watching birds and catching cicadas—a reflection of the Tang dynasty’s openness. However, the scene takes a sudden turn as you hear news of a political upheaval: Crown Prince Li Xian is exiled and takes his own life, while Li Guangren is imprisoned and renamed Li Shouli.

As time passes, you walk alongside the grown-up Li Shouli into the tomb of Crown Prince Zhanghuai. There, you see murals depicting the polo match, hunting expedition, bird watching and cicada catching. These artworks triggered Li Shouli’s memories of his beloved father, with deep sorrow. In the end, you return to the present with the polo ball gifted by Li Shouli, feeling the murals’ profundity as they connect life and death, bridging the past and the present.
