Theme From Traditional Education to Virtual Classrooms – Education and Social Development in Hong Kong Cultivating talent to support prosperity and progress, education is the cornerstone of social development. Education has come a long way in Hong Kong – from the traditional Chinese study halls of the early days, through the schools set up by Chinese and religious organizations after Hong Kong opened its port to foreign trade and the Western educational approaches and systems that gradually exerted an increasing impact, to the role later assumed by the government as the central education planner. The government’s adoption of universal education after the Second World War saw it introduce nine years of free education with the aim of raising the standard of education and meeting the needs of social and economic development in Hong Kong. Following the development of the Internet and the outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic in 2019, modes of teaching and learning have experienced constant adjustments in recent times. In fact, Hong Kong’s educational system has undergone a variety of changes in different eras. Students are expected to develop relevant topics for their projects with a view to exploring the relationship between education and social development in Hong Kong.
