6/10/2010 – 10/1/2011
1/F Lobby, Hong Kong Museum of History
Jointly presented by the Hong Kong Museum of History and the Royal Asiatic Society (Hong Kong Branch)
In the 1970s, the Royal Asiatic Society (Hong Kong Branch) initiated a photographic survey covering the Central and Western Districts as well as the Mid-Levels, areas that the Government was planning to redevelop. The survey produced about 2000 photographs, depicting various old buildings, street scenes, Chinese customs, trades and crafts as well as people's daily lives. The majority of the buildings covered in this survey were built before the Second World War. In this exhibition, we have showcased close to 300 photographs in three themes, namely religious structures, public buildings and Chinese residences. The images displayed on panel and video, unveil the uniqueness of Hong Kong's architecture and the changing faces of our society.
