Landslides are one of the most common natural hazards in Hong Kong. They are very destructive and usually result in extensive damage. Over the past century of Hong Kong's history, landslides have occurred regularly. Slope safety has become a long-standing problem that will continue to be faced by Hong Kong people. The Hong Kong government set up the Geotechnical Control Office (now renamed the Geotechnical Engineering Office under the Civil Engineering and Development Department) in 1977 to deal with slope safety problems. Since the Office was established, a comprehensive slope safety system has progressively been developed, and hence reducing casualties and disruption from landslides to a minimum. The Civil Engineering and Development Department has such presented this exhibition that, through the selection of various historical photographs, supplemented by videos and interactive programmes, describes notable landslide events in the past century and reminds people of the need to stay vigilant and be prepared for potential landslide hazards.
