Beginning with its pioneering Tung Wah Hospital, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals had provided service for the deceased since its founding in 1870 in accordance with the law. Besides free coffins and assistance in burials, Tung Wah’s bone repatriation service helped hundreds of thousands of Chinese people who died overseas return to their roots. The service has transcended clan and geographical boundaries, and showed respect for the deceased – a core value of Chinese funeral and burial traditions. Today, Tung Wah Coffin Home and the extensive collection of invaluable relics and historical records related to the bone repatriation service are testimonies to Tung Wah and Hong Kong’s role as a global hub in bone repatriation for Chinese people around the world. Through this exhibition, it is hoped to share the relevant cultural heritage with younger generations and pass on the humanistic spirit of the bone repatriation service.
