In 1841, Britain forcibly occupied Hong Kong Island, beginning 156 years of colonial rule. China consistently upheld its position on sovereignty and did not recognise the three unequal treaties relating to Hong Kong. Under colonial rule, the deep ties binding the motherland to Hong Kong were never severed. Hong Kong gradually developed along a path distinct from that of cities in the Mainland.
