Theme 2: East Meets West

Since the mid-nineteenth century, Hong Kong’s harbour and geographical position have made it a key point of exchange between China and the wider world. The movement of people, goods and ideas brought Chinese and Western cultures into contact—in architecture, commerce, education and everyday life—shaping the city’s distinctive character and making it an important gateway through which the world came to know Chinese culture.
