Gallery 5: Fusion of Chinese and Western Cultures

Twentieth-century urbanisation fostered a thriving urban culture in Hong Kong, where tong lau, trams, teahouses, opera sheds and sporting activities together shaped a distinctive metropolitan way of life. This gallery recreates the street scenes of 1930s Hong Kong and highlights the everyday lives and livelihoods of its Chinese residents, revealing the urban character shaped by the meeting of Chinese and Western cultures.
